At HawkFranklin Research, we’ve developed a concept called “Research Capsule”—a next-generation framework for presenting and disseminating cutting-edge research in a way that is more accessible, engaging, and quickly adaptable for different levels of learners. We see this as the natural evolution of the research dissemination process, which has historically moved from dense academic books to more streamlined articles, videos, and now short-form media. Our goal is to bridge the gap between advanced research findings and the audience’s level of expertise, so that knowledge flows more freely and inclusively.
What Is a Research Capsule?
A Research Capsule is a multi-tiered, concise representation of a single research project or paper. We’ve designed three distinct “levels” of this capsule to cater to different types of readers:
Delta (Secondary Level)
Audience: Secondary or higher-secondary school students (and curious learners at a similar level).
Format: Up to 2 pages, using accessible language and clear structure.
Goal: Offer a simplified yet rigorous snapshot of the research. While it’s not as in-depth as a full academic paper, Delta still includes core scientific concepts, data summaries, and basic validation. This allows younger learners to engage with the essence of the research without getting lost in excessive jargon.
Omega (Undergraduate Level)
Audience: Undergraduate students (or equivalent early-stage researchers).
Format: Up to 3 pages, striking a balance between accessibility and complexity.
Goal: Provide more detailed insights into the study design, methodology, results, and implications. We maintain more technical language compared to Delta, but still ensure it’s approachable for those new to advanced research.
Sigma (Graduate Level & Above)
Audience: Graduate-level students, industry professionals, and advanced researchers.
Format: Up to 5 pages, offering a deeper dive into the methodology, data analysis, theoretical framework, and the implications or future directions of the study.
Goal: Serve as a comprehensive, yet concise, distillation of the original research paper. Sigma can rapidly onboard someone with a solid background in the field, giving them an actionable grasp of the cutting-edge without requiring them to parse an entire lengthy manuscript.
We encourage PhD-level researchers or senior scientists to refer to the original full-length paper if they want the absolute depth of detail. However, the Research Capsule aims to spark curiosity and understanding across a broad spectrum of readers—be it high school students exploring STEM for the first time or professionals looking to quickly digest the latest findings.
Why Research Capsules?
Accelerated Knowledge Transfer
Textbooks and traditional publications often take years to update and disseminate. By the time content reaches mainstream education, it may be outdated. Research Capsules expedite this process by condensing essential information and making it readily available to different levels of learners much earlier.Inclusive and Customizable
Traditional academic papers can be intimidating or incomprehensible to non-specialists. By tailoring each capsule to a specific audience, we ensure everyone can engage with frontier research in a meaningful way. This inclusivity fosters a culture of continual learning and curiosity.Strengthening the Research Community
Early exposure to advanced topics can inspire a new generation of thinkers and innovators. Providing digestible, multi-level content encourages collaboration and cross-disciplinary dialogue, potentially opening up fresh research avenues and partnerships.
Why This Matters
In a world advancing at breakneck speed, bridging the gap between “new knowledge created” and “knowledge absorbed by society” is critical. Research Capsules expedite this process by meeting learners where they are, both in terms of language complexity and conceptual depth. By teaming up with organizations like OpenAI, we hope to push the boundaries of how research is consumed, understood, and applied, thereby nurturing the next generation of innovators.
